The Historic Chinese American Cemetery of San Jose
The historic Chinese American Cemetery is located in San Jose on Curtner Avenue, adjacent to the Oak Hill Cemetery. This historic site is a small 140×160 plot of land, with an altar and a burner for traditional paper offerings. The Historic Chinese American Cemetery is one of the last few remaining Chinese American historic sites in the country.
South Bay Historic Chinese American Cemetery Corporation
Since its inception, the historic cemetery has been cared for by members of the Chinese American community. However, as the community became scattered throughout the county, a more formal structure was required to preserve the cemetery and its historic significance. Accordingly, in 1980, the South Bay Historic Chinese American Cemetery (non-profit) Corporation was established under the laws of the State of California.
The duties of the Corporation are:
- Keep up the appearance of the cemetery
- Maintain the existing structures
- Add only those improvements which will not detract from the historic value of the cemetery
- Educate the community at large concerning the historic significance of the cemetery
- and Other appropriate activities
The South Bay Historic Chinese American Cemetery Corporation is governed by a Board of Directors, with the help of several officers. Anyone agreeing with the goals of the corporation may apply for membership. Donations to the corporation are tax-deductible.
